Let me tell you what happened to me recently.

I was in a restaurant, someone asked to see my "beautiful" bracelet. I was so excited, I unclasped the bracelet and yep...all the beads slid right off all over the place! On one hand I was embarrassed, on the other hand panic set in as I wondered would I be able to find all of them? Fortunately I did find all of my beads, now I have placed a clip lock (stopper) at the screw end of my bracelet to prevent any from sliding off when I remove the bracelet. So, it is well worth the minimum price to secure your investment! Also, the lovely selection of clip locks become part of your bracelet design and enhance the beauty of your style! We offer 5 styles of sterling silver clip locks, and 3 styles of the sterling and gold.

A bit of history on beads and charms

As we have expanded my personal collection of historic old beads of antiquity it has been fascinating to us to learn just how long mankind, even when driven by the need to simply survive, has found time and many materials for making beads. Historians cite every possible theory as to the role of such beads, but one thing is certain, they have been around since neolithic times. While the level of refinement and the materials used have varied widely, it is obvious that men and women in virtually every country and culture have adorned themselves with beads since time immemorial. Even in our small collection we have those made by the Vikings and Egyptians. Whether made of stone, semi-precious stones, glass, sea shells, wood or a range that was only limited by the materials on hand or the ingenuity of the makers beads have been used in a variety of applications including simple decoration, a form of currency, religious objects, and as marks of prestige symbolizing special moments in one's life.

In much the same way as beads, charms that were worn on necklaces, anklets and bracelets have also long carried with them a very powerful religious or spiritual connotation whether to dispell the presence of evil spirits, ward off illnesses or danger, a form of exchange, or to denote position or prestige. Even the word charm carries with it the implication of special powers as in an implied incantation or spell, or the ability to influence another. Charms have ranged in size from the large single amulet to smaller and more varied items signifying special times, event, or powers. One couldn't be too careful in warding off the right spirits or dispelling curses!

Today charms have become so poular that even the very poular Natiopnal Public Radio recently produced a segment that can be heard in this audio clip . Even a simple internet search reveals the lengthy history and applications of charms, especially the rapid and varied growth since they became so popular after Queen Victoria was so often seen in public with her own collection.

In terms of history and especially the crafting of fine jewelry, no place in the fashion world stands in a position of prominence like Firenze, Italy. Located adjacent to Florence, long one of the premier trade and banking centers of the world, Firenze has produced fime jewelry from precious metals since the time of the Roman. With Mother's Day being just around the corner, have you thought of how you are going to take the time to tell her you love her?

In our work-a-day lives we can always find reasons to be busy. Sometimes that means busyness for the sake of busyness, when, truth be told, with a little reorganization and reprioritization you CAN find time for those you love. Now some people have great relationships with their parents and that is a beautiful blessing. Others, for a host of reasons have more distant relationships in which they seldom call or visit their parents. With business demands, social events, few days off, distances between us we can always find some reason to justify overlooking or simply forgetting opportunities to build family ande relationships. Today, especially in the U.S. we are raised for "success", too soon launched and too soon out. We are missing something very special here!

I remember times back in the fifties of sitting on the front porch with aunts uncles and cousins, attending family reunions, 4th of July barbecues, summer visits and so much more. These were times that I will always treasure. Today, with so very many factors that destroy families and make relationships ever harder we are losing much of what used to be the underpinnings of our culture. In today's society people may well have more, but a what price?

Consider this as an invitation and an opportunity to do yourself a favor and do something special for, and even better, with your mother. My mother is now dead, I stood at her bedside and watched her die so I know that she will never be here with me again. Believe me, that is a kind of being alone that is poignant in its permanence and irreversibility. There is no going back when your mother is gone, no further opportunities to say, "I love you". No matter what the past has held, whether your relationship with your mother and father is a blessed one with pleasant memories or more one marked with conflict, make this Mother's Day your opportunity to do something right and good, for her sake AND for yours!
